The Empty Nest Dream

Principal architect Vidit Chaudhary of architectural design firm Vibe Cachers, understood more than just lines and spaces. He saw dreams waiting to be transformed. When his clients approached him, their brief was deceptively simple: create a home that wasn’t just a house, but a canvas of their next life chapter. Empty nesters with a passion for modern design, they wanted a space that whispered elegance while shouting functionality.

They put it so eloquently describing their dream home as if in a haiku –

“A dream house that is tranquil & interacts with nature

A dream house that always welcomes our homecoming”

“We’ve spent decades building our careers,” they shared. “Now, we want a home that reflects our journey.”

Vidit knew right then that this wasn’t just about designing walls—it was about crafting a narrative of transition, of new beginnings.

Architectural Challenges Unveiled

Every design problem is unique & so are its design solutions.

The plot was challenging—an urban lot in leafy Chandigarh with strict municipal regulations. Vidit’s initial designs wrestled with conflicting requirements: maximizing space, ensuring thermal efficiency, maintaining aesthetic appeal, and creating a facade that could withstand urban environmental pressures.

Traditional materials seemed restrictive for his facade design. Brick felt too heavy. Glass appeared too fragile. Concrete seemed cold. Each material presented limitations that threatened to compromise the design’s soul. The facade wasn’t just an exterior—it was the first chapter of his clients’ new story.

The Material Quest Begins – Facade Design The Villain?

Vidit embarked on an exhaustive research journey. He visited manufacturing facilities, consulted material scientists, and analyzed global architectural trends. His vision demanded a material that could be both tough and tender, robust yet refined.

Every material has a language,” he would later explain. “My job is to find the dialect that speaks to a specific design’s narrative.” Weeks turned into months of exploration, with each potential material falling short of the comprehensive requirements.

Strongly influenced by acclaimed international architect Mies van der Rohe design credo – ‘GOD is in the details’, he just couldn’t compromise with any material.

Confronting Design Limitations

The breakthrough came after much frustration. Traditional facade materials consistently failed his stringent criteria. They lacked the flexibility needed to create the flowing, organic lines Vidit envisioned. Performance metrics were disappointing—thermal inefficiency, high maintenance costs, and limited aesthetic ranges plagued his options.

Another challenge was the choice of colour. Since the facade was envisioned in dark colour, it had an inbuilt challenge. Joints tend to leak with white efflorescence over time with weather.

Sustainability was another critical factor. His clients were environmentally conscious professionals who wanted their home to reflect their commitment to responsible living. This added another layer of complexity to the material selection process.

Discovering the Porcelain Slab Revelation

Stonelams’ porcelain slabs emerged like a Phoenix. These weren’t just building materials—they were architectural poetry. Lightweight yet incredibly strong, they offered unprecedented design flexibility. Their manufacturing process boasted impressive environmental credentials, using natural materials with minimal processing.

The technical specifications read like a designer’s dream: exceptional thermal performance, zero porosity, UV resistance, and a lifecycle spanning decades. More importantly, they could be shaped, coloured, and textured to match virtually any design imagination.

And remember the problem with the colour choice? The dry cladding Stonelam solution helped overcome this problem too.

Bringing the Vision to Life

With porcelain slabs, Vidit could execute his most ambitious design elements. His concept behind the facade was to create something that was naturally evolved & not enforced. The facade became a dynamic canvas—shifting subtly with changing light, creating interplays of shadow and texture that brought the entire structure to life.

It’s not just a material,” Vidit explained to his clients. “It’s a storytelling medium.” The porcelain slabs allowed him to create a facade that seemed to breathe, that responded to environmental conditions while maintaining structural integrity.

A Design Triumph

The completed home became more than a residence—it was a testament to architectural innovation. The Thompsons’ facade told a story of transition, of elegance meeting functionality. Neighbors and architectural journals alike marveled at the seamless integration of form and function.

“We didn’t just get a house,” his elated clients reflected. “We got a living, breathing space that understands us.”

Reflections

Vidit Chaudhary had done more than design a home. He demonstrated how the right material—in this case, porcelain slabs—could transform architectural limitations into opportunities for extraordinary design.

With the help of Stonelam’s innovative porcelain slabs, his bold design was brought to life. Seamlessly merging the form with the material – complementing it rather than competing with it.

Truly an architect & a house owner’s dream.
